4.0 out of 5 stars Strong, Light, Safe - Hearing Protectors a Little Dicey, October 16, 2008

I rate safety equipment on two criteria: safety itself, of course, and usability. The Stihl gets 4 stars on safety. It's a good-quality hard hat, an effective, durable and strong face shield, and good hearing protection.

Usability is a ratings issue for safety equipment because it directly impacts how willing a user is to actually use the item. I downgrade the rating on this helmet just a bit on usability issues. It has two problems. The first is that the headband is a little oddly-shaped. Unlike any other helmet I've used, the back of the band hits high on my head. While it has never come off, it never feels quite secure enough. The second is the hearing protectors. They work very well in the sound protection sense, but they do not hold their settings and are fussy to swing up onto the helmet. You wind up having to put the saw down and use two hands to swing them up, or to readjust the fit when swinging them down again.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor design, April 28, 2012
This review is from: STIHL 0000 886 0100 Forestry Helmet System (Lawn & Patio)
We expect the best when we buy anything with the Stihl name on it. This helmet falls far short of those quality standards. The face shields works O.K, just O.K, but the ear protectors have never fit snugly enough to protect my ears from sound. They have been loose and floppy from the time I bought this helmet. I have been cutting wood for 40 years and I know chainsaw equipment. Now, the swiveling plastic housing that controls the up and down action of the "earmuff" has broken rendering this helmet useless. You would be much better off finding a different helmet such as the Husqvarna.

3.0 out of 5 stars stihl forestry helmet, April 30, 2011
Its the 3rd type of forestry helmets I have owned in the last 25 years. In my younger years I used them in the bush but now only see's action a few hours a week when I do my yard work. This one I bought new a few years ago. The hearing protection is not great, but OK, as even with the pressure set to max, it tends to drift off my ears. Also the part that allows the ear cups to move to the off/on of your ear has recently broken. Inspection shows it is made of rather cheap plastic. I guess I will see what a replacement part is gonna cost.
